I could have been home years ago — no one seriously thinks I am a threat — but still I am here. Often in social justice circles I’m surrounded by affirmations of non-conventional beauties. Black is beautiful, fat is beautiful, etc. I think these ideas are incredibly important and I think that’s it’s important to liberate our standards of beauty from the colonial projects that defined them in order to devalue and oppress their subjects.

I just have a hard time imagining a new, fair, decolonized standard of beauty. I’ve tweeted and talked about this a lot before but I can’t settle on any concept of beauty that isn’t politically fucked. Every piece of a person’s physical appearance is politicized in some way—racially, ethnically, sexually, otherwise—and so a taste for any particular appearance is also inevitably political.

Eye color, weight, shape, hair, height, teeth, skin, lips, dress: these are the lines along which racism, sexism, and colonialism were visibly drawn. How able are we to really undo this brainwashing? There are those who stake out an attraction for almost every historically devalued feature. But more often than not we affirm ourselves simply for admiring darker-skinned, bigger-shaped resemblances of the same old white-centric features.

Declaring yourself unattracted to white people is politically empowering in that it destabilizes the colonial construction of beauty. But that rarely translates into an attraction towards all people of color. Even within a single group, along what new lines is attraction formed? Which attractions within communities of color are politically tenable? Follow the logical extreme of politically reclaiming beauty—fat, 4C-haired, dark-skinned, dark-eyed, non-cis-performing people—and the group is large enough that you’re likely not attracted to all of them. Aren’t the physical distinctions between them still politically charged? Which of them, then, is it politically acceptable to be attracted to?

And can we ethically accept any more traditional (read: colonial) standard of beauty?

I can think of few things (facial symmetry? finger nails?) that probably aren’t historically-politically charged, and that seems like a scarce number of reasons to be attracted to somebody. Even the distinction of being “curvy” as opposed to less popularly “round” is heavily political.

I just have this lurking suspicion that even when we find ourselves attracted, sometimes exclusively, to any number and combination of marginalized groups, we are often most attracted to those among them who fall most neatly within an established image of colonial beauty—and if that’s true, are attempts at reclaiming standards of beauty ultimately futile, approaching an impossibly apolitical asymptote? If not, then along what other lines do we visually discriminate when forming physical attraction?

And finally, if we’re not categorically attracted to specific groups (Black, white, fat, thin, tall, short)—that is, if we exercise no “standard”—then what determines our attraction to specific people across these groups? Aren’t any of the traits we prefer going to occur more frequently in some groups than in others? What do our physical preferences look like, even if we’re not always finding them, and what are their new political implications? Probably not that new.

Two other women, also breast cancer survivors, said their husbands left them after they were diagnosed. Both had to have mastectomies (in case anyone doesn’t know, this is the surgical operation to remove one or both breasts).

The first woman said her husband told her that he would rather see her dead than see her lose her breasts. The second woman had her operation and waited all day to be picked up by her husband, who never arrived. By nightfall, one of the nurses offered to give her a ride, and she came home to find the house empty.

Obviously, these are extreme cases of a man’s reaction to his wife’s breast cancer, but this is what I see when I see the “I ♥ Boobies” bracelets. I see love of the body parts, not the person being treated—not the patient, not the victim, not the survivor.
